Eligibility Information and Entry Guidelines (source)

Entry Rules and Eligibility

1. Applicants must have been enrolled in a college or university at the time they produced and completed their piece. The eligibility period is January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010.
2. Producer(s) may enter only ONE piece per category (note exceptions in Music categories)
3. All pieces submitted must have been produced for school related classes, groups, or projects and must be verified by a Faculty Advisor. As soon as you complete your online application form, a Faculty Advisor form will automatically be emailed to your Faculty Advisor for completion. You will receive a copy of the email. If we do not receive your SIGNED Faculty Form by 6:00 p.m. PST on January 12, 2011, your entry will not be accepted. NO EXCEPTIONS

   The faculty form is to confirm the enrollment status of the producer(s), production date of the entry and that all positions stated below were held by students:

   • Producer
   • Executive Producer (unless this title is given to the faculty advisor as “special thanks”)
   • Director
   • Director of Photography
   • Camera
   • Sound Recording & Off-line Sound Editing
   • Off-line Picture Editor
   • Lighting Director
   • Technical Director
   • Production Manager/AD
   • Composer in “Best Composition” category

   Keep in mind that if you begin your application late, your faculty advisor may not have time to sign and return the form to us, in which case, you will be disqualified. (We recommend that you get this form signed before you leave for winter break).

4. Rules for Naming Your Piece:
• You must enter the name of your piece exactly the same way throughout this entire process. This applies to your online application as well as the uploading information on mtvU.

EXAMPLE: This is My Entry should always be written exactly as This is My Entry.

• DO NOT start your piece with THE.

EXAMPLE: The Newspaper should be written exactly as Newspaper, The.

• DO NOT use quotation marks.

5. A piece may only be entered in one category except as noted in the music categories. (See more Music guidelines in item #10 below.)
6. In the case of Music Composition, provided that the composer is a student, the producer can enter on behalf of the composer, or the composer can enter on his or her own behalf. The composer will be awarded the prize. (See more Music guidelines in item #10 below.)
7. Faculty are required to complete the Faculty Form that they will receive via email when you complete the faculty portion of your online application. They may act in an advisory capacity only.

Entry Guidelines

1. Focus on Diversity and Gender Equality in Children’s Media
   Sponsored by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media

   A $5000 cash award will be given to a producer who best showcases gender equality in their piece.

   Pieces should effectively and creatively follow these guidelines:

   • Show diversity and dispel stereotypes for how male and female characters are portrayed
   • Show a balance in quantity between male and female roles
   • Target children ages 2 – 11
2. The Loreen Arbus Focus on Disability Scholarship

   A $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to recognize student producers who:

   • shed light on people with disabilities, the nation’s largest minority group
   • help emerging artists within this community gain recognition
   • increase visibility for artists with disabilities
   This award will be given to producer who is disabled, whose piece focuses on people disabilities or to a piece that features a person with a disability as one of the main characters.

   Entrants in the Loreen Arbus Focus on Disability Scholarship are required to fill out a separate form. You will find the form when you select this category during the application process. A category description box will open. Click on the link to download the form. You may either scan the form and email it to [email protected] or fax to (818) 761-2827.

3. Pieces in the following categories may not exceed one hour: Comedy, Drama, Documentary and Narrative Series (Comedy/Drama/Webisodes).
4. Pieces in the following categories may not exceed 30 minutes: Animation, Music, Children’s, Newscast and Magazine.
5. Commercial entries may not exceed one-minute in length, and must advertise a product or service. PSAs WILL be accepted.
6. Narrative Series (Comedy/Drama/Webisodes): At least 6 episodes must have been produced within the eligibility period and be listed on the application form. You MUST submit 2 episodes. Submitting more than 2 will result in automatic disqualification.
7. Children’s: Content developed and targeted for preschool through 11 years of age.
8. Magazine: You must submit the entire show. Only the producer of record for the entire episode is eligible. Individual segments will not be accepted. Segment producers are not eligible to enter.
9. Newscast: Please specify if the show is daily or weekly and provide the airdate. The entire newscast must be submitted.
10. Music clarifications:

    Music (Best Composition):

    For entries in the “Best Composition” category, all composers must be students. Composition is judged on the ability of the music to reflect the essence of the piece for which it was written. All music compositions must be original.

    The composer or the producer may submit the entry in this category. The composer(s) will win the award.

    The composition MUST accompany the video piece for which it was written or it will be disqualified.

    Music (Best Use):

    Entries in this area consist of works where the creative use of music is exceptionally effective in the storytelling.

    If you are submitting a music video, it MUST be entered in this category.

    With the exception of music video, all other types of entries in the Music categories may also be submitted for judging in one other category that applies (see Fees section). Please refer to How to Apply

    If you are submitting a music video, and if the composition is original and composed by a student, the composition can also be entered in the Best Composition category (see Fees section). Please refer to How to Apply

11. Reality Programming will be judged on the following criteria:
Overall Creative Excellence Reality Programs include programs in which the premise, circumstances or situations are manipulated for the purpose of creating the program, unscripted reality programs, competition programs and docu-soaps.
The reality genre may include, but is not limited to, the following elements: programs that use a cast or that use a casting process to choose participants who play a role; story arcs that are introduced, imposed and/or orchestrated by the program; melodramatic elements, including heightened interpersonal dynamics and character turmoil resulting from environments or events set-up by the program.
At least 6 episodes must have been produced within the eligibility period and be listed on the application form. You MUST submit 2 episodes. Submitting more than 2 will result in automatic disqualification.
12. Entries with more than 50% non-original material are not eligible. (There is no limit in the Documentary category).
13. All PSAs/commercials/advertisements must be deleted from submission materials.
14. If you are selected for a Blue Ribbon panel you will be REQUIRED to submit two high resolution .mov copies on DVD of your piece as well as a :30 second promo representing the content of your submission. DO NOT send materials until requested.
15. If your entry is not in English, it must contain English subtitles or it will be disqualified.
16. Entries of poor sound and/or picture quality will be disqualified.

Incomplete entries will result in automatic disqualification.
