Penn Alumni You Should Know About Vol. 21

MUSIC

Seth JacksonSeth Jackson’s (WG ’83) song “On Hold” appears in the new movie Reach Me with Sylvester Stallone headlining an all-star cast. It must be good if they got Stallone to do a movie without “Expendables” in the title.

Seth also reports that his song “Oh, My Badness” was recorded by the European country band Rhythm 4 Boots on their album entitled Country Inside. The album was named Country Album of the Year in Austria. You know what they say – “If it plays in Austria, it’ll play everywhere.” (Editor’s note: no one’s actually ever said that, but we do hope it plays everywhere. Go Seth!)

Acclaimed composer/songwriter/singer, Gabriel Mann (C’95, Off the Beat), will participate in the ASCAP Songwriter Residency, a partnership with America SCORES. The Residency is a mentorship program that provides a platform for songwriters to engage and inspire elementary and middle school students in under-resourced neighborhoods.

Learn more about Gabe in this interview in which he discusses the four other TV shows he writes for – “Modern Family”, “Rectified”, “The Exes”, “Marry Me”, ‘McCarthys” (He’s the third Penn alum on this show). He also writes songs for Mattel, where our boy PJ Lewis works as well. In this interview, Gabe also talks about his creative process, the words he hates in songs (“just”, “really”, “so”), what his great calling card to this date is, and his advice to budding songwriters – “don’t say no.” It’s a must-watch!

Congratulations to Co-President of artist management company Atom Factory, Ty Stiklorius (C’97, WG’ 03, Friars) for making Billboard’s Women in Music 2014 list!  We suppose it doesn’t hurt to have fellow Penn alum John Legend as a client!

WEB

Machinima producer Joel Rubin (C’03, Mask and Wig) and actor Jonah Platt (C’08, Off the Beat) bring us the off-off-off Broadway production of “Assassin’s Creed: The Musical”, a five minute Broadway-style song and dance showcase that recounts the entire Assassin’s Creed saga. If you love musicals, video games, assassins, or creeds, check out Assassin’s Creed: The Musical below!

Kelly Diamond (C’13, Penntertainment writer and LA co-chair) and the same Jonah Platt (C’08, Off the Beat) from the previous blurb, bring us “College in 59 Seconds”. At Penn’s tuition, that’s about $4,000 per second.

Justin Ching (C’11) @TheBuzzer on FOX brings you all of the buzzy videos, stories, and GIFs from all over the Internet. They just had their best week ever with 7.8M views/week. Their top video was Cristiano Ronaldo’s NSFW nickname for Lionel Messi (2.4M view, 6K shares). I have several NSFW nicknames for Lionel Messi, but something tells me that 2.4 million people would not be interested in them.

Rafael Friedan (C’04, Phi Kap, co-writer of this article) brings us the over-the-top comedy short “The Yearbook Detectives” about two self-proclaimed detectives who – 20 years after high school – attempt to bust the guy voted ‘Most Likely to Succeed’ for not being successful enough. What will you do when they come for you?

David Stern (C’89, ENG’89) writes and produces the Amazon Prime show Mozart in the Jungle, and he kept it in the David Sternfamily by hiring Caroline Yost (C’15, Bloomers) and Lizzie Sivitz (C’13, Bloomers) as writer’s PAs. Stream all episodes 12/23 only on Amazon Prime, and check out more Penn alumni who keep it in the family here.

Mozart in the Jungle synopsis: Sex, drugs–and classical music–what happens behind the curtains at the symphony can be just as captivating as what happens on stage. Looks like I’ve been wasting my time at those Motley Crue concerts (aka amateur hour). Who wants to get turnt up at the next LA Philharmonic concert?

What People Are Saying

"Because of Penntertainment, I got scouted for Nickelodeon. I had such a great time talking with them. I may be a resource for a show on science, travel, geography, gender etc. Thanks for all you do. It really makes a difference."
