Penntertainment

“Yo You Want To” Organize an event with a group of people you (sorta) know?

Hey undergrads, let’s say you want to play a game of soccer on Franklin field, go into Center City to grab lunch or see a show or even plan a study group with people from your mega-econ lecture but your friends are not available or not interested …but you still really want to do this activity.

One Penn alum was so inspired by leading an orientation for transfer students that he’s created a site to allow for these interactions to take place.

More after the jump…

Nikhil Nirmel (W’08, Venture Initiation Program, Drummer for Mask & Wig, Quadramics, Penn Singers)‘s site, Yo You Want To” allows students to find other people on campus that they sort or know to do stuff with. Every dorm, class and student group has their own page, so planning a study group with people from your mega-econ lecture is totally possible too.

How was Nikhil inspired to create this site?

“I led transfer orientation while I was at Penn. In my opinion, the single greatest orientation event was the small group dinners, in which we would randomly assign six transfer students to go to dinner together somewhere far off campus. I can’t tell you how many people ended up being best friends until graduation and beyond who met at these dinners. There’s something about having something in common with people and doing something together in which you have the opportunity to talk that makes people form lasting bonds. I thought that this type of get-together is something that doesn’t happen nearly enough, and that it should be the type of thing that any student should be able to put together.

After graduation I worked at Penn web startup, Yodle, and now I’m at Yelp. I’ve seen how awesome web communities can be, so I got together with some friends and former colleagues to put this together.

YoYouWant to is now available at Penn, NYU, Columbia University, St. John’s College, The New School and Palm Beach Community College.

What People Are Saying

"Because of Penntertainment, I got scouted for Nickelodeon. I had such a great time talking with them. I may be a resource for a show on science, travel, geography, gender etc. Thanks for all you do. It really makes a difference."
