1) Your name, class year and activities you were involved in at Penn
Matthew C. Johnson C’99, Mask & Wig, Phi Kappa Sigma
2) What news you would like me to consider:
I directed and produced a number of new shorts hitting the internet:
“Pepsi Challenge:” produced with my sketch group The Royal We
(www.theroyalwe.org), this short film is a parody of the Pepsi
Challenge, The Manchurian Candidate, and, well, just watch it. We’ve
had a lot of success with it on FunnyorDie.com, most other websites’
legal departments get a little touchy about it.
“Shopping Tarts”: produced with the hottest musical-comedy phenomenon
to come out of New York City in 2007, The Apple Sisters
(www.myspace.com/theapplesisters), this Looney Tunes-style short was
created for, and was one of four finalists in, the 10-Items-Or-Less
video contest sponsored by Crackle.com, TBS and the San Francisco
Sketchfest.
“Corndy”: another short I directed for The Apple Sisters, this is a
“commercial” for one of the “sponsors” of their 1943 radio show. This
just hit the interweb yesterday, so we’ll see how it does.

doing. Take a look at http://beginnings.duelingtampons.com for

Matt Johnson got his start doing what he’s doing when he stopped
waiting for someone to recognize his genius and decided to foist it on
the world.

After Mask & Wig – I mean Penn – I went to New York City and started
working in independent film production – from production assistant to
assistant director to producer’s assistant. It was a year of
assisting. So I started studying improv comedy with The Second City’s
New York training center – which doesn’t exist any more, sadly. With
four fellow students and one of our teachers I started The Royal We,
we moved from improv to sketch and from the stage to the film set, and
3 years later we got a development deal with TV Land to do a sketch
comedy pilot.
