Penn Undergrads You Should Know About Vol. 5

Liza Davis (C’17)
College 2017
English
Baltimore, Maryland.Liza’s love for theater began here at the University of Pennsylvania. In the spring of her Freshman year, some of her friends encouraged her to get involved in the
African American Arts Alliance, also known as 4A. Since then, she has worked as a stage manager for
Aida, directed
The Bluest Eye, and performed on stage for the first time at
FPan. Working on
The Bluest Eye, a Toni Morrison piece, was particularly challenging for a first-time director. Morrison writes serious and complex novels that Liza describes as “beautifully cruel.” Deciding how to artistically represent incestual rape was difficult, but in the end Liza was most proud of how the team was able to pull together an amazing and moving production that sold out all 3 shows. Liza describes 4A as “huge part of her life at Penn.” In high school she found that there were many artistic communities surrounded around visual arts and ceramics, but at Penn she has finally found an artistic community where she could fit more succinctly.
Even behind the scenes, Liza feels that she is able be a part of something that can both entertain and change lives. While 4A is an artistic community first, the members are also conscious of the power they have to make political statements. For example, through The Bluest Eye, the group was able to bring salient discussions of the cross-generational marginalization of black lives and black beauty. For now, Liza is unsure of what future opportunities there are for tech roles, however she is inspired by 4A alumni who are involved in post-graduate work in acting and media.
