Taylor Blackston (C’15) is a Communication major who hails from Detroit. Taylor is involved with New Spirit of Penn Gospel Choir, the Du Bois House Council, and Abuse and Sexual Assault Prevention. She is a Media Planning and Strategy Intern for Viacom, specifically with Nickelodeon.
Why Nickelodeon?: During the job fair portion of the IRTS Multicultural workshop, I had a conversation about my budding production-related interests with a recruiter from Viacom and she encouraged me to apply to their internship program. I wanted to get an internship in entertainment/television and Viacom is a great place to get that experience.
Take Us Through A Normal Day: In the morning I check my email to see if I have any new tasks or projects to complete. If I don’t have new things to do, I get back to my long-term projects. For instance, my personal project is creating an intern handbook that is specific to the Media Planning department. Sometimes I get to watch shows or movies before they air, usually for brand mentions, which is when a brand is either spoken of or a product/logo is noticeable in the content. Oh, and I can watch any Nick show while I do other administrative duties. I’m on episode 9 of As Told By Ginger right now.
What’s Your Favorite Part?: The culture. Everyone I’ve met is funny and helpful. I feel really lucky to work for people who want to help me figure out and achieve my goals. Plus, there are Nick characters everywhere. My favorite is definitely the life sized SpongeBob near the conference room.
